Week 5 Term 2

 Week 5

Tālofa lava!  This week is Samoa Language week.

Samoa Language Week celebrates the identity, language, and culture of students from Samoa and students whose families are from Samoa.  Throughout the week there will be activities children can participate in during class time as well as lunch breaks.

Why not try learning some words or phrases to use at home this week…

  • Tālofa lava: Hello (formal)

  • Mālō le soifua: Hello/Good health

  • ‘O ā mai 'oe? How are you? (to one person only)

  • Manuia fa‘afetai: Good, thank you

  • Manuia le aso: Have a great day

  • Tōfā soifua: Good bye (formal)

Our Learning

This week sees our morning play change to a different curriculum area.  Over the next two weeks children will have the opportunity to develop their skills as scientists.  Teachers will be supporting the children to use the science capabilities such as observing, inferring, and gathering data while conducting simple science experiments.

We continue to be impressed with the perseverance of all our children in their reading and writing.  It is always a pleasure to see children trying their best and working hard to achieve

their own personal learning goals.

This term, in maths, we continue to develop our knowledge around number.  We will also be looking at measurement which includes volume, length as well as time (days of the week, months of the year).  Measurement is a wonderful learning area where children are able to use their knowledge of number to solve real life problems.

Ko Hāta Maria Icon

We are incredibly lucky to have the icon Ko Hāta Maria - Holy Mary in our parish.  All children

in Kākano will visit and learn about this beautiful icon during the week.

Pentecost Mass

This Friday, 9am, Kākano children will be running our whole school Mass.  All families are welcome to join us in the church.  It will great to have our community celebrate Mass with us again.  We also have two of our Kākano teachers, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Mareroa being invited into the Catholic church.

Pentecost is a special time in our church and is known as the Birthday of the Church.  Our learning in RE this week will be about Pentecost and the gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit.

The week ahead

Tuesday: Book Club at lunchtime

Wednesday: Kākano children visit the icon (11:15 - 11:45)

Golden Time-Photo Tag

Today for Golden Time we played ‘Photo Tag’. The Taggers had iPads and if you got your photo taken you were out. Tag was one of our favourite games that the class voted for Golden Time. Over the next few weeks they have voted to make Marshmallow slime, make spiders(fizzy with ice cream) and make some cookies.

Sounds like Golden Time is going to be lots of fun!

Celebrating Anti Bullying Day

Today we celebrated Anti Bullying Day by wearing our pink shirts. The school raised $400 so thanks for your generous contributions. Earlier in the week Tristan and his Mum made us some donuts covered with pink icing to celebrate the week too. Here are a few photos to share with you.

Measuring length

This week we have been measuring with standard and non standard units. We used a block of cubes to measure items in our room and today we used a metre ruler and talked about centimetres  to measure with. A good start by all!

Week 3 Term 2

Thanks so much to all our Parents, Caregivers and students who came to our 3-way Conferences this week. It was great to catch up with you all and discuss your childs progress and next steps.

School Photos

On Monday morning we have our school photos. Our classes are up first so there will be little chance to get dirty. We will make sure all our tamariki are looking just right for the photos. Boys are to have their woollen jerseys on and girls are to wear their skivvy and tunic with long hair

tied back. Please can you ensure your child’s jerseys are named too, in case they take them

off!

Our consultant, Marion Kirby from Learning Matters will give you a brief overview of how the brain learns to read - you may learn a thing or two yourself!

Playing 'keepy uppy'

Today is Tabitha’s birthday. She brought in some balloons for us to use. First we had to blow them up. Have you ever asked your child to blow up a balloon? It was a very challenging task for some. Nearly everyone managed to blow their ballon up. This would be a great task to do at home!
Then we played ‘Keepy uppy’. This is where you have to keep the ballon up in the air without letting it fall to the ground. It was definitely a great work out. There was lots of laughter and chattering-it was so much fun. We tried different games with the balloons. Thanks Tabitha and Happy Birthday.
